Root canal treatment is provided when the inside of a tooth becomes infected. It is a delicate and gentle procedure to remove infected tissue and to restore your mouth back to health.
Every tooth has a complex internal structure made of nerves and soft tissue. When the outside of a tooth cracks or is damaged, bacteria can infiltrate the internal structures and cause tooth pain and sensitivity. It is important to tackle this infection to prevent the bacteria from spreading.
Symptoms of an internal root infection can include:
- Generalised tooth pain
- Pain when eating or chewing
- Loosening of a tooth
- Swelling of the gum
- Facial swelling
Without treatment, a root infection can ultimately cause the loss of a tooth.
Also known as endodontic therapy, root canal treatment is a commonly offered procedure which our team of dentists can provide professionally and comfortably. Local anaesthetic can be used to numb the site and for nervous patients we can offer additional sedation.
In simple terms, the top of your tooth is removed so that the dentist can access the internal infection and clean it out using files and a dental disinfectant. Once this has been completed you may require a crown to seal the top of the tooth and to strengthen the remaining enamel, however this is not always necessary.
